Yanks Try to Get On Track Against Young Orioles

Yankees_Orioles_Baseball_066e9-6010Baltimore Orioles @ New York Yankees – Friday April 12, 2013 7:05PM EST

The betting world is waiting for the Baltimore Orioles to get on track for the season. Few fans are going to panic with a 3-4 start to a 162-game season, but the Orioles do need to show a little more consistency from the mound if they want to be in the AL East pennant discussion. Baltimore’s offense was in place when the season started, but a lot of observers had issues with the Orioles’ bullpen and starting rotation. A win over the Yankees in Yankees Stadium would do a lot for the confidence of this young team.

What an interesting start to the season the New York Yankees have had. Experts might point out that the Yankees are probably very lucky to have the 4-4 record they have after the way the team started. All of the injury drama with Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter has left fans wondering if the Yankees have what it takes anymore to contend for a World Series. The time is coming for a new Yankees lineup to emerge and the sooner the team can find those future superstars, the better off the organization will be.

Baltimore Orioles

Taking the mound for the Orioles in this game will be Miguel Gonzalez. He is one of the young arms that the betting online sports world is so high on and for good reason. He is 1-0 on the season with a 2.84 ERA. He played well in his opening game of the year against the Tampa Bay Rays. He allowed five hits and two runs in six and one-third innings. That is the kind of production the Orioles need from their starting rotation to win games and it also helps to take the Baltimore bullpen out of the equation until very late in the game.

New York Yankees

People are getting used to seeing C.C. Sabathia lit up in his first start of the season, but that does not mean it is getting any easier for Sabathia. The Yankees’ ace was touched for eight hits and four runs in only five innings in his opening game against the Boston Red Sox. Sabathia did come back a few nights later to shut down the Detroit Tigers for no runs in seven innings. It is the Detroit performance that the Yankees would like to see for the rest of the season.

The Bottom Line

The New York Yankees are looking to make a march to the AL East pennant in closer Mariano Rivera’s last season. The Orioles have some great young bats and they have a good pitcher on the mound in this game, but it will not be enough to get past a determined C.C. Sabathia and the New York Yankees.
