MMA sports betting fans have to love when the UFC runs events on network television, as they can get comfortable, sit back, and enjoy a live card without the hassle of having to pay a premium for it. That is exactly what will happen this Saturday night as the UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Melendez event is held at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California, with a stacked card headlined by a UFC Lightweight championship fight between Benson Henderson and challenger Gilbert Melendez. That title fight alone would be enough reason for fans to tune in, but it isn’t the only bout that they have to look forward to.

The last fighter that Henderson defended his title against will be on this card in Nate Diaz, who is set to face another former No. 1 contender from the Strikeforce side in Jason Thomson. Diaz can tie Rashad Evans for the second most UFC wins by a winner of the TUF series with a victory this weekend, and the same bookies that are responsible for the Kentucky Derby odds have Diaz as the favorite at -185. Thomson hasn’t competed in the UFC since 2004, and he is by no means a young prospect. This fight is considered a must-win for both competitors, as a loss would drop either fighter out of the title picture at least for the time being. Each of Diaz’s six losses came via decision, so Thomson will need to patient to have any chance.

Speaking of a UFC title picture, former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir will take on former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier in a bout that could have major ramifications. Mir is coming off a loss to Junior Dos Santos and likely won’t get an immediate rematch if he wins, but he should provide an excellent test of merit for Cormier and that could mean a title shot for Cormier with a win. Cormier is undefeated in 11 professional fights and his heavy fists make him an excellent contender to challenge for the title. An online sportsbook win could mean a shot at a No. 1 contender spot, especially considering that Mir owns the most all-time wins in the UFC heavyweight division with 14. Cormier has already been through so much throughout his career, and he should be ready for the biggest stage. As for the main event, this will be the third time that Henderson puts his title on the line and he has already registered unanimous decision wins all three times thus far. It will be a champion versus champion showdown as Melendez is a former Strikeforce champion, and online betting fans have to be hoping he could put up a stronger challenge than Diaz did when Henderson dominated him in his last title defense.
