The global appeal of soccer has just been confirmed by Facebook. Just over one billion posts had been recorded by Facebook till the 29th June. The event makes it the most popular since facebook has been operating for the past ten years. Another interesting fact is that the world cup has been larger than the Academy awards, The Super Bowl and the Sochi Olympics combined. These have been confirmed by facebook.
“People are having conversations on Facebook about what they watch in a really unprecedented scale. In addition to sharing and connecting with friends, people are engaging in real time with the media and the public voices they care about most and what they care about most is national pride and in most cases showing their patiotism towards their national team,” a facebook spokesperson has claimed.
For some nations, the World Cup is massive. The people have a great chance to show their own true colours, and pride which will influence other users on facebook to do the same. It is quite a phenomenon. In Colombia, for a population of 50m and an internet penetration of 49%, their star player and stand out player of the tournament James Rodriguez has 10m likes on his facebook page and a further look at his page, on one particular post he got 2.1m likes making it just over 20% of his total facebook likes. This is quite an astonishing statistic.
The most liked post of the world cup has been Neymar and Hulk. The image which was uploaded to the Instagram and Facebook Account of Neymar after the last 16 qualifying match with Chile got already 3.5m likes. It is quite remarkable.
