On Monday March 4th LeBron James broke a series of NBA records in a performance that was nothing short of jaw-dropping.
For starters, he broke his own record of 56 points from back in 2005 when he was playing for Cleveland in a game against Toronto. He also beat the Heat’s highest point record, which was previously held by Glen Rice; also at 56 points. Monday night was also the night that LBJ racked up the tenth game in his 11 year career where he scored more than 50 points. In the midst of doing all this, he also somehow managed to have 5 assists. Along with Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, LeBron is now the only other player to have scored more than 60 point in a game.
Impressed yet? Here’s another fun fact to help you put Monday’s feat in perspective. Only 3 other players in the history of the NBA have managed to pull off the same combination of 61 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists since the 1985-86 season; Michael Jordan in 1990, David Robinson in1994 and Tracy McGrady in 2004.
“First of all, I was able to do it in a win,” LeBron commented when asked about his record-breaking performance. “I probably had three or four just Heat check shots out of rhythm, just taking them. Third thing, to do it with a group of guys I would do anything for. It means so much. These guys are really true brothers of mine.”
His teammates were no less generous in their praise for their forward:
“Phenomenal. Amazing. Stupendous. Immaculate,” Heat center Chris Bosh gushed. “Not many of his shots were forced. We were finding him. He got some easy shots, some transition buckets. Got to the free throw line. All his shots were in rhythm, they were open.”
Meanwhile Shane Battier went as far as to say:”This is what the yogis talk about, about reaching that alternate level of consciousness.”
LeBron, however, kept his humility when discussing the 124-107 victory against the Charlotte Bobcats.
“The man above has given me some unbelievable abilities to play this game of basketball,” he said to reporters. “I try to take advantage of it each and every night.”
This was the eight consecutive victory for the Miami team, who are now 43-14. It’s safe to say that the MVP race just got a lot more interesting.
