NBA Betting: Memphis Grizzlies Notable Offseason Moves

Boston Celtics v Memphis GrizzliesThere is a lot of things worth salvaging with the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies finished as the fifth seed in the Western Conference, but this was a team that was consistently putting fear into the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs. Things got so intense that the Grizzlies dared to challenge the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals and took San Antonio to overtime twice before finally bowing out of the playoffs. The Grizzlies need some size in the paint and some strength under the boards for the 2013-14 season. Memphis has made some interesting moves in the offseason and some are making the Western Conference take notice.

2013 NBA Title Odds:  20/1

Notable Change #1: Resigning Tony Allen.

Tony Allen’s contributions to the Grizzlies do not translate well to the score sheet. Allen is a defensive expert that has been consistently recognized for his defensive play by his peers and by the league. At only 6’4” tall, you would not expect Allen to be able to rebound in the defensive zone like he does. But he knows how to use his strength and he also knows how to keep other players off the ball as well. Allen is a valuable resource for the Grizzlies and making sure that the team has him locked up for a few more years was an important move.

Notable Change #2: Signing Mike Miller.

Guard Mike Miller was the fifth pick overall in the 2000 draft by the Orlando Magic and he has proven himself to be a reliable player ever since. He is also a well-traveled player who has been on four teams, but he keeps going back and forth to the same four teams every couple of years. In late July, the Grizzlies signed Miller for the second time, and it was a very good move. He averages 12 points per game, but it is his rebounding that makes his so valuable. He was part of the Heat’s two championship teams and he comes to the Grizzlies with a lot more experience than the last time he was in Memphis. This is a good move for Memphis because it secures the offensive boards and also gives them a reliable assist man.

Notable Change #3: Promoting Dave Joerger to head coach.

This was not only a good move by Memphis, but it was also a very smart move as well. Joerger has been an assistant coach in Memphis since 2007 and he was an extremely successful D-league coach before that. After six years as an assistant, it was time that some team gave Joerger the reigns and the Grizzlies will be pleased it was them. Joerger already has the respect of the veterans as he coached many of them in D-league. His experience developing players will allow him to find success with the youth that Memphis has brought in.
