MLB all star 2014 update

The 2014 Major League Baseball All-Star Game will be the 85th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game. It will be held at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the home of the Minnesota Twins. This marks the third time that the Twin Cities have hosted the All-Star Game. Metropolitan Stadium hosted the game in 1965, while the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome hosted the game in 1985. It will be televised in the United States on Fox as part of a new eight-year deal. In preparation for the game the Twin Cities’ transit company, MetroTransit, has announced that the new METRO Green Line light-rail between downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul will begin service on June 14.
The Chicago Cubs were the only other team bidding for the 2014 All-Star Game.Although typically the leagues rotate hosts every year, except for 2006 and 2007, which were hosted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants, respectively, (with 2014 being the American League’s turn), Chicago hoped an exception would have been made for Wrigley Field to honor their ballpark’s centennial (1990 was the last time Wrigley hosted the All-Star game). The National League had however already recently hosted consecutive all star games in 2006-07.
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter continues to lead in voting among American League shortstops after the latest round of voting results for MLB’s All-Star Game were announced Sunday.
Despite batting just .254/.312/.300 in 54 games for the Yankees this season, the 39-year-old Jeter is leading runner-up Alexei Ramirez by more than one million votes. Jeter has been an All-Star on 13 different occasions, though he missed last year’s game for the first time in seven seasons.
Elsewhere in the AL, Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista (2,135,223 votes) passed Mike Trout (1,945,170) for the overall AL lead with just over a month remaining before July 15’s All-Star Game at Target Field in Minnesota. Bautista leads all AL players with a .435 on-base percentage and has also belted 15 home runs. He has been named an All-Star in four straight seasons dating back to 2010.
Bautista’s teammate in Toronto, Melky Cabrera, rounds out the starting outfield with 1,096,784 votes, while Miguel Cabrera (1,477,420), Robinson Cano (1,111,800), and Josh Donaldson (1,470,544) fill out the rest of the AL’s infield.
Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (1,235,369) is in line to start at catcher despite remaining on the DL with an injury to his throwing elbow.
In the National League, Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki remains the highest vote-getter with 2,007,202, joining Bautista as the only two players to eclipse two million votes thus far. Tulowitzki has made the All-Star team on three prior occasions. He leads the National League in batting average, OBP, slugging percentage and home runs.
Mets third baseman David Wright has overtaken the top spot at the hot corner for the NL with 859,082 votes as Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Utley remain the top players at second and first.
Yasiel Puig (1,472,717) is now the NL’s top vote-getter in the outfield after his torrid May. Giancarlo Stanton (1,259,047) and Carlos Gomez (1,192,174) would currently join Puig in the outfield after both players leapfrogged Andrew McCutchen (1,190,516) in the voting.
Cardinals backstop Yadier Molina (1,621,944) is currently slated to start at catcher.
Voting for MLB’s All-Star Game will continue through July 3.
