A wild first weekend set the March Madness betting community ablaze, as top-ranked NCAA contenders seemed to drop left, right and center. Heading into the Sweet 16 just 11 of the 20 highest seeds remain in the bracket.
While three of the No. 1 seeds will live on to see the second weekend, the overall No. 1-ranked club, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, will not. The Bulldogs zigged when they should have zagged against an upstart Wichita State club, which takes 40/1 odds of winning March Madness into the tournament’s fourth round.
Atop the NCAA futures remains the Louisville Cardinals. With 3/1 college basketball odds, they’re the consensus favorite to cut the nets come the tournament finale in April. Fellow No. 1s Indiana (5/1) and Kansas (12/1) trail a number of equally dangerous programs.
No. 3 seed Florida has 19/4 odds of winning March Madness, but it’s been the Florida Gulf Coast University club in particular that’s won the hearts of fans in the Sunshine State. Though they have just 66/1 odds of going all the way, their upset over No. 2 Georgetown will go down as one of this tournament’s finest.
