The Lions landed safely on Tuesday morning and without considering the fact that they were jet lagged or tiredness may have been creeping in, they headed straight from Gatwick airport to an NFL Play 60 event in Surrey. Surprsingly, they were met with great enthusiasm from the little children and they immediatley took a liking to them before they started to carry out some drills with the children.
This has been part of the PR strategy in order tfor the NFL to give it a boost overseas, particularly in the UK, where there seems to be such a strong wave of interest. With music banging out loud, the Detroit Lions will have been highly satisfied. If the team can leave Wembley on Sunday with their heads held high, when they face the Atlanta Falcons, with a similar feeling this will have proved to be a remarkable trip, but as things stand the Lions are not taking anything for granted.
“Anytime you suit up on Sundays you want to get a win” he said “They’re a team in the NFC so it counts, big time! They’re a talented football team. They’ve got some injuries but when their guys are playing, they can really play so we’ll have our work cut out.”
The injuries Stafford refers to are largely along Atlanta’s offensive line where they have lost the spine of their team and that is five starters and on SUnday they will need to dig deep in their roster to come up with suitable and adequate replacements to carry out the job what is expected of them.
Detroit have their own mini injury crisis with wide receiver, Calvin Johnson nursing an ankle sprain in his ligaments for just over 2 weeks…although his presence in London means that he stands a great chance of being fit and being able to take part.
“I’m working to get on the field, each and every day,” he said “If I’m good enough to play, I’m going to play.” On the prospect of playing at Wembley he added, “it would be a great experience. It would also be nice to experience what an english player does when they play for the national team”. Calvin is a great admirer of soccer, and he has confessed that he follows soccer at every given moment he can.
