The final two weeks of the season have arrived, putting that much more pressure on pitchers to perform. Who will have a little more mustard and location on his fastball? Who will falter?
Los Angeles Dodgers @ Arizona Diamondbacks
This is a Tuesday tussle on the MLB odds between two of the best pitchers in the National League West throughout the season. Los Angeles starter Zack Greinke’s ERA was 3.49 in late July, but it’s down to 2.74 after more stellar work in the dog days of summer. Greinke hasn’t given up more than two runs in a start since July 25. He’s been uncommonly reliable for the Dodgers, a huge reason why this team has blown away the rest of the division since the All-Star break. Greinke will be opposed by Arizona ace Patrick Corbin, whose ERA was 2.31 on July 23 and has grown to 2.97, though never topping the three-run mark. Corbin had two particularly rough starts a few weeks ago, giving up a total of 14 runs in those two outings. Since then, he has stabilized, giving up four total runs in his last 14 1/3 innings.
Texas Rangers @ Tampa Bay Rays
This is a very important game in the sportsbook on Wednesday because it matches two teams that are desperately fighting for the American League’s two wild card spots, but it’s also an attractive matchup because the pitchers are really good. Derek Holland of Texas sports a 3.40 ERA, while Tampa Bay’s Chris Archer checks in at 3.03. Holland, though, has been pounded in his last three starts, giving up 18 runs in 13 1/3 innings. Archer has also showed signs of strain in recent weeks, but his last outing was a six-inning shutout of Minnesota on Sept. 13.
Seattle Mariners @ Detroit Tigers
This is a fascinating Wednesday matchup in that Justin Verlander, Detroit’s starter, is going to be seen as the underdog pitcher. Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma has been the far better pitcher this season, throwing down a 2.87 ERA compared to Verlander’s 3.66 mark. Iwakuma has thrown shutouts in two of his last three outings, while Verlander has generally been a “three runs in seven innings” kind of pitcher this season, good enough to eat up innings but not nearly good enough to shut down opponents. Verlander has lacked that dimension this season.
