The Giants host the Royals, who will play their first game in San Francisco since 2005, in a pivotal Game 3 of the World Series. Tim Hudson will start for the Giants as he pitches in a World Series game for the first time in his 16-year-career. He will be opposed by Mark Guthrie, who has some experience pitching in San Francisco.
The Royals avoided falling 0-2 in the series with a 7-2 win in Game 2 to end the Giants’ streak of seven consecutive World Series wins. Billy Butler is 3-for-6 with two RBIs over the first two games to end his postseason struggles but he is still looking for his first home run.
Buster Posey also hasn’t homered in the postseason and he is 2-for-9 in the World Series while Pablo Sandoval (4-for-9 in the World Series) also hasn’t hit a home run despite batting .346 in the postseason.
Jeremy Guthrie (0-0, 1.80 ERA) vs. Tim Hudson (0-0, 3.29 ERA)
Jeremy Guthrie will make his second start of the postseason, having received a no-decision against the Orioles on October 14 when he gave up one run and three hits over five innings. Guthrie spent part of 2012 in the National League with the Rockies and he has made two career starts at AT&T Park, going 0-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 11 1/3 innings.
Tim Hudson will be pitching for the first time since taking a no-decision against the Cardinals on October 14, when he allowed four runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Hudson lost his final four regular season starts while dealing with a nagging hip injury but he has bounce back, given up just five earned runs over 13 2/3 innings (3.29 ERA) in his first two starts of the postseason.
