Even with it being one of the most action-packed months of the sports betting months of the year in terms of UFC action, the excitement heading in to the UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz card was tangible for MMA fans around the world, and was hyped as what could possibly be the best card of the month. Even with all of that hype the UFC on Fox: Henderson vs. Diaz event lived up to expectations, lasting more than six hours and keeping fans on their feet for most of that time. There is still another event to look forward to before the Kentucky Derby betting race is run on the first Saturday of May, but prior to turning the page to the UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen Pay Per View, it is important to recognize the big winners from last Saturday, including UFC Lightweight champion Benson Henderson.
Henderson survived his toughest test yet, beating Gilbert Melendez by split decision to retain his title. The 29-year old titleholder has won seven-straight fights since making the transition to the UFC, including three consecutive defenses following his championship win over Frankie Edgar at UFC 144. Henderson overcame a hostile crowd and a very tough challenge from Melendez, but he managed to steal the online sportsbook victory and escape with the title intact.
While there was no title on the line, another big winner from the UFC on Fox event is Daniel Cormier, who made his UFC debut with a unanimous decision win over former two-time Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Cormier fought a smart and strategic bout and was careful not to allow Mir to steal the victory by leaving his self exposed to a knockout punch or submission. Cormier will likely face another contender before he gets the nod in the UFC Heavyweight title picture, but a loss to Mir would have been devastating to his chances so it was important to get that initial online sports betting win.
The other big winner from the UFC on Fox event was Josh Thomson, the former Strikeforce Lightweight champion that took a major step forward in his debut. Thomson clinched the TKO win over Nate Diaz with a vicious head kick and a flurry of punches, and despite being 34-years old he has to be on the radar in the division following that big win. Thomson’s win comes after a close split decision loss to Melendez, and considering Melendez nearly upset Henderson for the title it is hard to eliminate Thomson from that picture. There is a lot to look forward to after Henderson, Cormier, and Thomson each earned big wins at the UFC on Fox event, and while it will be easy to forget about the fights with UFC 159 already here, they truly stole the spotlight at one of the better UFC events of the year so far.
